The CBT – Compulsory Basic Training – is an introduction to motorcycling.
It is designed to provide you with the riding skills that you will need. Successfully complete your CBT and you are legal (legally entitled) to ride on the road.
A CBT limited the rider depending on age. At age 16, the rider is restricted to a 50cc bike with a top speed of 28mph. From age 17+ riders can expand to a 125cc motorbike with a top speed of 60mph. A CBT must be renewed every 2 years.
The AM licence will allow a rider of age 16 to ride without a L plate, additionally they are allowed to carry a pillion. The same restrictions apply on the bike, up to 50cc and a top speed of 28mph. However, this licence does not need renewed every 2 years like a CBT.
This will entitle the rider of Age 17+ to ride up to 11kW power and a top speed restriction of 60mph. Riders can carry a pillion, use the motorway and not display L plates.
This will entitle the rider of Age 19+ to ride up to 35kW power. Riders can carry a pillion, use the motorway and not display L plates. A minium of 395cc is required for this license.
Available from age 21 if you have held an A2 licence for 2 years. Allows the rider to ride any CC of motorbike on completion. Riders can carry a pillion and use the motorway.
